How to Self-Publish an Art Book

Wondering how to self-publish an art book on your own? It’s totally doable and we can prove it!

Katie has self-published four books and today she’s sharing what she’s learned about self-publishing as an artist and how you can do it too.

What does it mean to self-publish?

When you self-publish a book, you’re doing it on your own without the help of publishers like Penguin Random House.

You’ll be in charge of creating, designing, manufacturing, distributing, and marketing the book.

Why self-publish?

You Don’t Have to Wait Around

You can take your idea and run with it, as fast or as slow as you’d like to. You can also make your own decisions, rather than running it past your publisher’s team.

Higher Profit Margins

Since you’re in charge, you can expect higher profit margins. You won’t be splitting any of the profit when selling your book!

Great if You Already Have an Audience

If you already have a large audience, self-publishing an art book is a great way to get your work out there! It will make marketing your artbook easier because you already have a following that loves what you do.

Why not self-publish?

You Have to Fund It

The not-so-fun part of self-publishing: funding the book. Luckily, there are a few ways to navigate this! We go over this & more in our video, How to Self-Publish an Art Book!

No Marketing Help

You’ll be in charge of getting your book out into the world! If you already have a large following, this should be easier than not.

You Have to Manage Every Part of the Process

Manufacturing the book, customer service requests, marketing the book, are all pieces of the self-publishing puzzle. It can be very rewarding, but it also depends on where you are in your art business and what you can focus on.
